Kernel hangs immediately after GRUB, does not run...[solved]

I am trying to set up a new install with my rootfs on LVM on top of dmcrypt. I am using GRUB and UEFI/GPT. Until yesterday, I thought I wouldn't need an initramfs, but I now know that I do. I generated one with genkernel, reran grub2-mkconfig, and rebooted. I observe this behavior: First thing after the UEFI screen, GRUB asks for my LUKS key. I enter it. The GRUB menu displays, and I select my Gentoo install. These lines print out on an otherwise black screen: Code: Loading Linux 3.12.13-gentoo ... Loading initial ramdisk ...

Lsmod live cd to configure kernel?

Hey guys just made the switch from Arch to Gentoo, I have Gentoo installed however I'm missing eth0 (I know there tons of threads about this I've read them haha), I've been using genkernel but I'm convinced my network module isn't compiling with the kernel, so I wanna try manually configuring it. So my question is can you just run "# lsmod" from the livecd and configure the kernel with all the modules that are loaded from the livecd? I do have a network connection enp6s0 when booted in the livecd. That doesn't seem too difficult if that is the case haha. Thanks. I really just want to know if...

Help newbie with Liva X installation

Ok. Pay no attention to the fact that I've been a member of this forum for over a decade. The fact of the matter is that all those years ago a friend of mine who was a Gentoo user installed the OS onto my laptop, after which he turned it over to me and I administered the system for a time. That was when/why I joined this forum. I spent a few months administering the system before deciding that Gentoo was just too complex and time-consuming for me. I went back to Debian/Ubuntu after that, though I did, some years later, switch from that to Arch. All this is to say that, though I've been a...

I'm trying to build an initramfs for a headless server using a GPG encrypted LUKS keyfile to unlock a ZFS root system. Using Genkernel (in combination with GnuPG Legacy) I can make a functional initramfs. But as a headless server I'd need to use a SSH connection to unlock it, which Genkernel doesn't do. Dracut can do everything, including SSH, but I can't figure out how to make the ZFSonLinux module for Dracut. I can do a git clone of the whole ZFSonLinux repository, but how can I make the Dracut module? The second problem is the fact that I can't seem to unlock the GPG keyfile remotely, but...

Machine wakes up immediately after suspend

Hi guys. I have a problem (again). My PC wakes up immediately after I send it to sleep (using Gnome3 pause button or using a fancy command like "echo -n 'mem' > /sys/power/state") It goes to sleep and a second later wakes up again. Sometimes it suspends ok. But most of the time it fails. There are some logs on the screen when it goes down and up, but I can't catch them. Where could I search for them? Tried journalctl but found some rubbish: Code: Jan 17 21:19:01 localhost systemd-journal[4061]: Runtime journal is using 8.0M (max allowed 803.9M, trying to leave 1.1G free of 7.8G available →...

No keyboard to unlock encrypted root

My root partition is luks encrypted. I have been using a default genkernel configuration with --lvm --luks. the system had seen many reboots, however after the latest boot, I was unable to unlock the partition. the keyboard works in the grub menu and as well as in a chroot environment.I don't know what had changed. I urgently need use of the machine and don't want to backup/restore onto an unencrypted drive if I don't have to. any suggestions are welcome. thanks.

Root not resolved by initramfs on raid0 with mdadm

I have been trying to create an initramfs with genkernel-next, but without success, as documented here . In an attempt to troubleshoot the issue, I tried to create an initramfs with dracut , and even tried multiple permutations of a custom initramfs . None of them worked. I have a booting system right now only because I am booting with an initramfs created with the old genkernel, but it seems I am unable to create a new functioning initramfs by any means. I have banged my head against this problem for many hours over several days, and I am at a loss to figure out what I may be doing wrong. Any...

Problem migrating from SCSI drives to SATA drives

I have a fairly old PC running Gentoo with a 2.6.38 kernel. The machine was built on a stack of UW160 SCSI drives and an Adaptec 39160 controller and works fine. However, the drives are now rather on the small size so I have installed a SATA controller and a pair of SATA drives. The controller is based on the Sil3512 controller, so I've re-compiled the kernel to include support for sata_sil. That all works well, and I've partitioned the new drives and copied across the filesystems. After doing this, it wouldn't boot, sticking at the grub> prompt resisting all attempts to boot it. I decided to...

Genkernel + udev + imsm RAID = no root device

This problem has kept me up long enough tonight, so this will be quick and possibly not terribly coherent. I boot off of an imsm (fakeraid) mirror managed by the md kernel subsystem (and mdadm), so I have to boot with an initramfs. I build the initramfs with genkernel. I fully updated my system over the last few days, and tried to boot into the new 3.17.8 kernel. Without warning, genkernel now defaults to UDEV="yes" in its config because I boot with systemd and that supposedly doesn't play well with mdev. However, doing so results in my boot array (md0) not being assembled and a swift kernel...
