The Hindenburg’s Smoking Lounge... Quote: The Hindenburg’s smoking room was thus a necessary concession to global travelers who could book a first-class cabin on the greatest ocean liner ever built (even to this day), the Normandie, at no more than half the price. Guillaume de Syon, author of a standard book on the zeppelins, points out that the room was extremely popular and travelers would otherwise have been oppressively bored, at least when no land was in sight. An open pack of premium cigarettes was thus a centerpiece of Hindenburg advertisements. Should the passengers have been worried? The hydrogen-buoyed airship had...

Linux Process Control QuestionMy wife likes to run Facebook flash games in Firefox. Her computer is starting to show its age. Flash crashes regularly, sending the CPU to 100% and making the system completely unusable. This never resolves itself, leaving the only option being a hard reset. I know flash is garbage... I'm not really looking for a solution for flash. Rather, I'd like to contain the problem. I Googled a bit and found suggestions for using renice on /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container. However, once the problem hits, I can't access it. If I could, I'd just kill the process. I also found suggestions to use...

PC media censoring wave of Muslim rapes of Swedish girlsQuote: Swedish girls Malin and Amanda were on their way to a party on New Year’s Eve when they were assaulted, raped and beaten half to death by four Somali immigrants. Sweden’s largest newspaper has presented the perpetrators as “two men from Sweden, one from Finland and one from Somalia”, a testimony as to how bad the informal censorship is in stories related to immigration in Sweden. Similar incidents are reported with shocking frequency, to the point where some observers fear that law and order is completely breaking down in the country. The number of rape charges in Sweden has tripled in...

Socialist Dependant Trampoline Bear DiesSocialist Dependant Trampoline Bear Dies Quote: Bears are by nature 99 percenters. They are not rich, they grab what they can where they can and they just want to get along and raise their bear families. Occasionally misfortune befalls them and a safety net is needed - as happened to our Boulder, Colorado bear, who found himself disadvantaged and stranded in a tree. Fortunately, the state had its safety net, in the form of a trampoline, standing by. When our Boulder bear finally gave up on life and dropped from the tree, he was saved by the government trampoline, albeit with a few bumps and...

New E-Mail Password, Thunderbird HangsI looked at this thread before deciding to post. I thought that OP's method was a bit too draconian I am having the exact same problem - new e-mail password, Thunderbird recognizes that, but does not recover so I can enter my new password. I have done the following: 1. Tried Safe Mode. No joy. 2. Forced Thunderbird to close. 3. Rebooted (yeah, I'm running Windows 7). 4. Found and inspected my profile. I found two sets of directories -- myoriginal and myoriginal-1 . The directory structure concluded with -1 contained newer entries. I combined the two sets of directories and deleted what I did...

A cynical processLabor unions, like the United Nations, are all too often judged by what they are envisioned as being -- not by what they actually are or what they actually do. Quote: Many people, who do not look beyond the vision or the rhetoric to the reality, still think of labor unions as protectors of working people from their employers. And union bosses still employ that kind of rhetoric. However, someone once said, "When I speak I put on a mask, but when I act I must take it off." That mask has been coming off, more and more, especially during the Obama administration, and what is revealed underneath is...

What makes PAM unwanted?Uhm... the title is a little too... wait, IIRC the developers of UNIX authentication themselves advised against PAM as they found that system insecure or not as secure as it should. Or was it FreeBSD maintainers...? Anyway I remember I read there were fellows (whose opinion looked quite enlightened to me) who would never put/advise PAM on their distribution and would instead keep using UNIX legacy authentication, i.e. a hashed password in a flat file. Rather than messing around who could have said that, I'd like to know what PAM features could make it less desirable than UNIX plain...

Linux Format Magazine pulled from U.S shelves.Hi everyone, People probably already know about this but I only came across it today. The February 2012 issue of Linux Format magazine got pulled from shelves of Barnes and Noble in the U.S because of the cover article. More information is below. What do you guys think about this? ... _________________ "If you are new to UNIX, you may be used to clicking something and seeing either an "OK" message, an error, nothing, or (all too often) a pretty blue screen with nifty high-tech letters' explaining exactly where the system crashed" - Michael Lucas

Temporary location for email attachments on OS XWhen opening an email attachment in Thunderbird (or Mozilla) on OS X the file is saved to the desktop and then opened. My desktop gets cluttered quickly. On Windows it saves the attachment to the Windows Temp folder instead of the desktop, which seems like a much more appropriate location. Is there some setting to get Thunderbird or Mozilla on OS X to use a folder besides the desktop as the temporary location for opened attachments? Thanks. I found a similar bug ... which was marked WONTFIX, and I can see why not for a web browser, but email attachments should definitely be saved to a temp...

Drone-happy Obama approves killing unidentified peopleQuote: Obama escalates in Yemen – again "April 18: The CIA is seeking authority to expand its covert drone campaign in Yemen by launching strikes against terrorism suspects even when it does not know the identities of those who could be killed , US officials said." At the time, I wrote that “it’s unclear whether Obama will approve Petraeus’ request for the use of ‘signature strikes’ in Yemen,” though that was true only in the most technical sense. It was virtually impossible to imagine that a request from David Petraeus, of all people, to Barack Obama, of all people, for authority to target...
