Linux Process Control Question

My wife likes to run Facebook flash games in Firefox. Her computer is starting to show its age. Flash crashes regularly, sending the CPU to 100% and making the system completely unusable. This never resolves itself, leaving the only option being a hard reset. I know flash is garbage... I'm not really looking for a solution for flash. Rather, I'd like to contain the problem. I Googled a bit and found suggestions for using renice on /usr/lib/firefox/plugin-container. However, once the problem hits, I can't access it. If I could, I'd just kill the process. I also found suggestions to use...

New E-Mail Password, Thunderbird Hangs

I looked at this thread before deciding to post. I thought that OP's method was a bit too draconian I am having the exact same problem - new e-mail password, Thunderbird recognizes that, but does not recover so I can enter my new password. I have done the following: 1. Tried Safe Mode. No joy. 2. Forced Thunderbird to close. 3. Rebooted (yeah, I'm running Windows 7). 4. Found and inspected my profile. I found two sets of directories -- myoriginal and myoriginal-1 . The directory structure concluded with -1 contained newer entries. I combined the two sets of directories and deleted what I did...

Sending messages failed - mail/newsgroup settings

Around every second message I send, I get this error: "Sending message failed. Please verify that mail & newsgroup account settings are correct and try again." I've looked searched through the threads on this topic, but none are very helpful. Only real 'solution' I found was to enable folder compaction, and that's already been enabled. ... I notice on here it mentions the error as well; but no word on a solution (for what it's worth, I haven't been pressing 'Cancel' in the middle of sending my messages). It's getting really frustrating, sometimes people end up with 3 or 4 copies of the same...

A cynical process

Labor unions, like the United Nations, are all too often judged by what they are envisioned as being -- not by what they actually are or what they actually do. Quote: Many people, who do not look beyond the vision or the rhetoric to the reality, still think of labor unions as protectors of working people from their employers. And union bosses still employ that kind of rhetoric. However, someone once said, "When I speak I put on a mask, but when I act I must take it off." That mask has been coming off, more and more, especially during the Obama administration, and what is revealed underneath is...

What makes PAM unwanted?

Uhm... the title is a little too... wait, IIRC the developers of UNIX authentication themselves advised against PAM as they found that system insecure or not as secure as it should. Or was it FreeBSD maintainers...? Anyway I remember I read there were fellows (whose opinion looked quite enlightened to me) who would never put/advise PAM on their distribution and would instead keep using UNIX legacy authentication, i.e. a hashed password in a flat file. Rather than messing around who could have said that, I'd like to know what PAM features could make it less desirable than UNIX plain...

Dock Icon weirdness

Looking over in the Dock I have the blue SM icon, round and normal. If I get an email it turns into a generic OS X app icon with the little message counter superimposed on it. Been that way for a while, I keep thinking that an upgrade will normalise it, but it hasn't.

Lots of questions for different topics. Stations, ST's, Stock xchange, board, andmore

Ok, to begin with, this is my first post so forgive me if a lot of stuff has been answered before, also I am a newish player so forgive me if i ask simple things or do not fully understand. I've looked but can only find more advanced discussions of the topics which leave out a lot of the more simple things that I am missing. Also, this is for Albion Prelude. Also I am doing the bankrupt assassin play-through, so no paranid or boron help, and most of this is taking place near the aladna hill area. So first up is a problem i seem to have with Sector Traders. I realize this has been posted many...

Government Issues Study of a Study About Studies

This Is Not a Joke: Government Issues Study of a Study About Studies Quote: The Pentagon was inundated with so many studies in 2010 that it commissioned a study to determined how much it cost to produce all those studies. Now the Government Accountability Office has reviewed the Pentagon’s study and concluded in a report this week that it’s a flop. The study of a study of studies began in 2010 when Defense Secretary Robert Gates complained that his department was “awash in taskings for reports and studies.” He wanted to know how much they cost. Two years later, the Pentagon review is still...

How to Recover Deleted Emails?

I have quite a large number of emails in my inbox that somehow got deleted before I intended them to be. Unfortunately I had emptied the "TRASH" before I realized that these messages are gone. There should still be copies on the server however (I use IMAP and Thunderbird 12.0.1) because I leave my messages on the server after Thunderbird reads them. Is there some way I can direct Thunderbird to go back a number of days on the server and re-load those messages? Also, as a matter of info, is there also a way to recover these messages locally, say by finding a backup file in the profile? Thanks...
