What makes PAM unwanted?

Uhm... the title is a little too... wait, IIRC the developers of UNIX authentication themselves advised against PAM as they found that system insecure or not as secure as it should. Or was it FreeBSD maintainers...? Anyway I remember I read there were fellows (whose opinion looked quite enlightened to me) who would never put/advise PAM on their distribution and would instead keep using UNIX legacy authentication, i.e. a hashed password in a flat file. Rather than messing around who could have said that, I'd like to know what PAM features could make it less desirable than UNIX plain...

Dock Icon weirdness

Looking over in the Dock I have the blue SM icon, round and normal. If I get an email it turns into a generic OS X app icon with the little message counter superimposed on it. Been that way for a while, I keep thinking that an upgrade will normalise it, but it hasn't.

Steel Batallion Controller 64-Bit for X-Series

So, to make a long story short, 32-bit drivers were available for this legendary controller, but 64-bit were no where to be found -- the best of which was a set of libraries released. I bought one of these to find this out tragically a few years ago. My own attempts resulted in little progress, so my bro had a go at it... and ta-da: ... There's an installation vid as well, and he demos MechWarrior on it. However, the driver is fully functional for lights and keys, and is mappable by an .ini file. I'm currently going to give my X3 games a go now that I have this beast in fully working order...

X3TC Dissapointed

Hello This is my first time playing any of the X series, and i got to say it is great, However i have now found it VERY frustrating and hope it is something that i am doing wrong, and hoping you guys could show me the right way. I have been making money mainly with UT's and gathered over 200 mil, so i decided to make a little strike force which consists of 8 Corvettes (Centaurs & Heavy Centaurs) myself in a Centaur, and a M1 (Colossus) The first frustrating part i came to in this game was sorting 60 fighters for my argon colossus, The time it took to equip, set orders, rename, and equip...

Presidential debates? Learn from the French.

... Quote: French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his challenger Francois Hollande have traded insults in their only TV debate of the election campaign. The president called Mr Hollande a "little slanderer", while his rival said Mr Sarkozy shirked responsibility. Mr Sarkozy defended his record and said he had kept France out of recession. But Mr Hollande said France was going through a "serious crisis" and was struggling with slow growth. The run-off vote takes place on Sunday. The BBC's Gavin Hewitt says it was a long, bad-tempered debate that left the impression that neither candidate liked...

[TC] Worst ships by class?

Hey there. So I've dominated the universe a few times over the last couple years, each time using the best and brightest ships available from all of the races. I've even added some of the difficulty scripts, and I'm just looking for more challenge. I'd like to dominate the universe again of course, but this time I want to do it with the WORST possible ships from each class, and I'd like some help analyzing the ships available to determine the best-worst ships out there. I figure some of the ship stat enthusiasts might be able to help out So, each class of ship fills a role - for example, M5's...

German fishermen: swimmers and skaters are killing off fish

Quote: Around 500 dead fish have been found in the picturesque Eichbaum lake near the northern port city, which attracts bathers in the summery weather. But now it seems those pleasure-seekers have blood on their hands. "Swimmers who urinate in the lake are introducing a lot of phosphate," Manfred Siedler, spokesman for the Hamburger Angling Association (ASV), told Bild newspaper. "We're calculating half a litre of urine per swimmer per day." Phosphate contributes to a build-up of blue-green algae in the water, playing havoc with the lake's eco-system and apparently poisoning the fish....

Hyperion or Heavy Centaur

So I recently captured a Hyperion, now im debating whether or not to use it, or my Overtuned H.Centaur with a speed of 166.Albion Prelude The Hyperion handles like a fighter, but its weapons loadout isnt ideal for boarding ops.It cant mount Ion Disrupters,or mass drivers,Thus I would have to swap ships forburning internal sentry guns ect,of my targets. The Heavy Centaur,is a beauty, she is a little sluggish on turning, but is able to mount Ion Disrupters and mass drivers.I like the way she handles, but she aint great against fighters. Whats your toughts lads?

R*censored* can't handle the truth about Bin Laden

Quote: When McCain noted that President Obama criticized Hillary Clinton's "invoking on bin Laden," McCain was right. And so did I at the time. But here's the big difference: the president isn't using bin Laden to scare us. The Republicans only ever used 9/11, bin Laden and terrorism to scare people into voting for them . This is fearmongering. It's the flagrant exploitation of both a tragedy and the threat of an on-the-loose maniac to trick voters into supporting Republican policies for no other reason than to ameliorate their irrational fear. The president, on the other hand, isn't telling...

Secret Meeting Changed Rap Music and Destroyed a Generation

... Quote: This anonymous letter landed in my inbox about a minute ago: Hello, After more than 20 years, I've finally decided to tell the world what I witnessed in 1991, which I believe was one of the biggest turning point in popular music, and ultimately American society. I have struggled for a long time weighing the pros and cons of making this story public as I was reluctant to implicate the individuals who were present that day. So I've simply decided to leave out names and all the details that may risk my personal well being and that of those who were, like me, dragged into something they...
